Memories Inc.

"He said i'm gonna buy this place and burn it down,
I'm gonna put it six-feet underground,
He said i'm gonna buy this place and watch it fall,
Stand here beside me baby in the crumbling walls,
Oh i'm gonna buy this place and start a fire,
Stand here until i fill all your heart's desires,
Because i'm gonna buy this place and see it burn,
Do back the things it did to you in return".
-A Rush of Blood to the Head, (Coldplay Song Lines)

Fall of 2050,
Auditorium Building, Chicago.

A thundering applause followed the announcement of Humanitarian of the year award to Mr. Alexander Wayne for his revolutionising organisation Memories Inc., a venture as unique as it sounds but responsible for  healing the unbearable and irrevocable agonies from the lives of thousands of people in a short span of five years since its inception.

Alexander Wayne,32, a post graduate in psychology from the prestigious university of Harvard, had developed a method of erasing a particular segment of memory from the human mind without altering the memory of a person as a whole.
In human mind, the memory formation is a very interesting process. The memory may be a Short-term or a Long-term memory. The patients of Alexander were often agitated by a tribulating past pertaining to agonising experiences of their past lives.
Alexander, however, sees it as the playground of memories. He, remarkably developed a brilliant method of amending the long-term memory into a short-term memory and then the short-term memory so formed which gets stored on something similar to an electronic tape in the mind, could be rehearsed, go back to the long-term memory or may be lost forever. This loop of salvation, as named by Alexander, was the key to freedom from the grim past. Alexander, with his revolutionising methodology, could harness this loop of information out of the human mind and store it in a simple compact disc thus formed when he used to heal his patients by connecting his brain to theirs via a super computer which formed these discs.
As a term in the agreement and treatment process, Alexander never returned these discs back to their patients
and after all who could have yearned for it?

05 Years Later..
December,2053
London.

Alexander Wayne's Memories Inc.was a common name in every home of the modern world. He had successfully launched a working clinic in every major city of the world and the American Govt. was far more keen in sending his name as a potential nominee for the next year's Nobel Prize for Medicine as well as Peace, for he was the one who had bestowed them with real peace.
Alexander, however, was called upon in his London clinic by his staff over there on SOS basis, as according to them, his technique was on the brink of its first failure.
It was raining on the day Alexander reached London and the weatherman had predicted the next few weeks as the most chilling the London had witnessed in almost a decade.
Alexander scurried across from the airport and met Dr.Ben Cook, a post-graduate in psychology from the prestigious University of Cambridge and the head of his London clinic outside the airport premises.
Without wasting further time both headed towards their London clinic.
-Oh, the weather is not going to be any easy for us Dr Cook as if personifying the current crisis that is looming
upon us.
-Certainly Dr.Wayne.This is the most chilling season the London has witnessed in almost a decade.
In almost an hour drive, they reached their London Office where the root cause of Dr Wayne's visit was waiting for him.
In the anteroom outside the treatment center, Dr.Wayne met an elderly lady. Her eyes were moist and the tears were sparkling in her eyes as she fixed her gaze upon him.
-She is Mrs Lloyd, the mother of the victim and she hails from one of the most respectable families of London.
-Thank you Dr.Cook. But i am eager to meet the patient and learn about his predicament as a whole.
-Sir, this patient Mr. Ian Lloyd, the 28 year old successful entrepreneur was engaged two months ago and his marriage is due on fifteenth of the next month. He came to us a week ago with his predicament.
-What predicament?
- He just could not forget her first love. He says its the most arduous thing in the world for him to part from his first love. But he's keen to get rid of her too as he does not want to mar his future life from any of her memories.
-So what's the big problem Ben? Have we not ever witnessed cases like these before?
-Not until the loved one was unreal.
-Unreal?
-Yes Alexander. Mr. Ian's first love is nothing but a character from his favorite literary novel " The Wind", in which the character portrays a flawless lover. A love so genuine, so divine that is nothing more than an elusive dream in this corporeal world we live in.
- It seems like you too are completely in besotted with her Ben.
-You can say that Alexander. It was a masterpiece.
- Fix my appointment with Mr Ben in a week's time. In the meanwhile, i want to get accustomed with his life so far, so don't bother to feed me with any bootless information of his life and most important, bring me a copy of "The Wind".
The Wind was a tragic love story set in the background of the times when the sailors used to depart from their ordinary lives in search of distant lands across the seven seas for the sake of development, nation's pride and knowledge. The central character of the Novel was Miss Angelina Duke, fiancee of Captain William Henry, who was assigned with the mission of finding new lands across the orient via the North Pole.
William departs with a promise to reunite with her forever, but his ship gets wrecked and the whole crew perishes in the frigid Arctic ocean.
Unwavering in the faith of his promise, she risks of sailing across the same route for his lover but no one approves of her voyage so she sails all alone for him. In the end, she recovers William's dead body in the remote island of Arctic and dies along with him in the brutal arctic.
The day of appointment with Mr. Ian was approaching and Alexander Wayne was done with his final preparations.
- All set Dr. Wayne?
- Ah Cook, I've been witnessing a trance like state in the company of Miss Duke. I must say, what a portrait of Love.
-Beware of her, she is as contagious as Love, the most enigmatic human emotion.
-That's true Ben. I would like you to assist me in this case. It would be more than a single mind's work.
-Anytime Wayne.
Alexander Wayne was having a formal conversation with Mr. Ian Lloyd before commencing with his treatment.
- I must say Mr Wayne you have an excellent choice for a Lover.
-Oh Yeah, Mary would be an excellent wife and i don't want to spoil one ounce of my love for anyone but her.
-Ha Ha, i was talking about Miss Duke from the "The Wind".
- Oh, now you know how difficult it has been for me Dr Wayne to get her out of my mind. I have a very emotional heart Mr.Wayne. My father left me in a very tender age. It was my mother who raised me in a very disciplined manner. This book was her gift to me, for she wanted to induce a spirit of sacrifice and love in me. And now she curses herself in the dark.
-Hmmm.. I have known a lot about you recently. Considering your circumstances and the days of agonies you have been through, its something obvious for you to yearn for a love so pious.
-Thank you Mr Wayne for understanding my plight.
-Anytime Mr.Lloyd. Coming to the point, i want a reassurance from your side that once the treatment commences, there will be no looking back.No matter what happens, you wont step back.
- I assure you Mr Wayne.
-Very Well. In this treatment Mr Ben will also be an integral part.
- I approve it and i have faith in your insight.
-So let's begin.
Alexander and Ben connects themselves with Ian and the supercomputer and the treatment begins.
-Mr Lloyd in your case, since we are dealing with something unreal and as per my observations, there is a certain role of her character that you are most fascinated with and if we could somehow erase that portion of your longing for her from your mind than the rest will be vanished along with.
-Mr Ben i just could not get her final voyage for William out of my mind,I just could not get the image of mighty ocean waves jostling to perish her maiden ship, I just could not let this serenade go, i just could not let her go..
Alexander saw tears in the eyes of Ian. He held his hand and assured him his recovery.
-Ben, this treatment involves an endeavor never undertaken before. For the treatment of Ian, we will have to convince his mind of the Reunification of Angelina with William.
-But that is something incomprehensible. In the story the William is dead.
-Yes, but we can alter the story. Mr.Lloyd is a very emotional person and for people like him, it is nearly impossible to profane their love. He will never let her go, unless she gets her William back.
-But the William is DEAD.
-For her, his mind can live the dream of seeing him alive. His mind can accept fantasy over the fact for her LOVE.
-And how is that possible?
-You and i will go to his mind where the body of William is lying on that remote island and we will reach there before she reaches on the island. There i'll be dressing as William and when she'd see me,i'd give a wave to her, shouting her name. When she'd be making to touch the shores with a gleam of pure love on her face, you'd terminate the process liberating yourself and Ian out of his mind.
-This was a theory, a theory never proved, one of your postulate.
-Then let's prove it today. For Love, the most enigmatic emotion.
-Is it worth it Alexander?
-You know Ben, when i started this venture, i had a regret in my heart which is still there, that i am making marionettes out of people. I am doing transgression with the truth of their lives by bestowing them a false life. I had always yearned for my redemption and when Angelina will found me in her lover's dress and cast all of the world's wrath upon me, that will be my redemption. An annihilation of my artificial endeavors by an ethereal love of an unreal character. And since i'd never be out of his mind, i want you to burn my body with the archive tapes. I have arranged it to appear as an accident. You will survive with my truth and will continue to heal people unless they realise the cost of accepting forged lives.
-Ben was silent with tears in his eyes. His acceptance was his approval.
The treatment started and Ben and Alexander voyaged on the chest of Arctic Ocean, afflicting chilly winds and cruel waves on their faces and finally reached the body of Captain William Henry.
They arranged as per their plans unless they the approaching Angelina.
Ben and Alexander saw all the Love of world in her eyes, all the truth of eternity in her every march towards waving Alexander dressed as William.
Ben saw tears in the eyes of waving Alexander.
-You were right my friend, its the most enigmatic emotion, yet worth of dying a million times in its honor.
Ben left his friend on the island and proceeded as planned.
In the fire of burning archive tapes, he could see the flames engulfing the body of his mentor, the redeemer, his best friend. Tears were dwelling in his eyes as he saw the smiling face of Alexander in the fire.

  1. Nice. End could have been better. It seemed as if you rushed into conclusion. Beginning was brilliant and it was very gripping. I would love to read it as a novel instead of a short story. Also, please work on grammatical errors. You can use MS Word in typing it and use spelling and grammar option to check it.

  5. Hey Phoenix,
To be frank, i never want the circle to be completed,as i want this camaraderie a never ending voyage, as it should be.
No matter how busy our lives be, i'd want that we never lose this source of inspiration that we are for each other.
The ocean is too wide my friend and we are too meager and let's stick to each other for this enigmatic voyage staring in our eyes..

  6. Arvind, I just feel that I am not really in a position to fulfil the promise I made to write on the topic we agreed, and have for this reason let you down. I had always intended to keep up with your progress on your blog and add my little comments to your posts. i value the friendship that has developed between us and look forward to making any positive contribution i can towards promoting it. i think you have the abilities to become an outstanding writer, and far more creative than I am, as demonstrated by your last piece. I do apologise to you for being unable to fulfil the commitment I made to you, but things are moving very quickly for me at the moment. Once things settle down I'll be in a better position to organise my time. Phoenix is back on board.
